Sunday School in Action: Bringing the Parables Into Today

Last Sunday, our Sunday School class took on a special challenge: retelling the parables of Jesus in a way that speaks to the world we live in today.

The week before, each participant was asked to choose a parable, study the message Jesus was teaching, and then create a short presentation adapting that lesson to a modern-day setting. The goal was not to change the meaning of Scripture, but to recognize something important about the way Jesus taught: He used situations people understood—farming, money, family relationships, work, weddings, and everyday life—to reveal eternal truths.

Our class followed that same example.

Each presentation gave us an opportunity to see familiar passages from a different perspective and to consider how Christ's teachings continue to apply to the choices, challenges, relationships, and influences we encounter today. From the decisions we make to the way we treat others, the truths contained in Jesus' parables are every bit as relevant now as they were when He first spoke them.

What made the morning especially meaningful was seeing members of our class step forward to study Scripture for themselves and then teach what they had learned to others. It reminded us that learning God's Word is not meant to stop with us. We are called to understand it, live it, and be prepared to share it with the next generation.

As Jesus said:

“He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.” — Matthew 13:9

We are grateful for everyone who participated and for the thought and effort that went into each presentation. Moments like these remind us that Sunday School is more than simply sitting together and studying a lesson—it is a place where we can ask questions, grow in our understanding of Scripture, encourage one another, and learn how to carry the message of Christ beyond the walls of the church.

The setting may change. The generation may change. But the truth of God's Word does not.

We look forward to many more opportunities for our Sunday School class to learn, participate, and grow together.
